While our top 25 best dog breeds list showcases many of the most beloved dog breeds, those that didn’t make the cut are equally special in their own ways. Each and every breed has unique traits, charms, and strengths. So, whether they made our list or not, it’s important to keep in mind that individual breeds have distinct characteristics that can make them a perfect fit for particular types of owners.

Some breeds excel in niche roles or have specialized skills that are incredibly valuable, and just because a breed isn’t on our top 25 best dog breeds list doesn’t mean it’s any less lovable. Many breeds not on our list can be ideal pets for people with select lifestyles, needs, or preferences.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes nearly 200 breeds, and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognizes 360 dog breeds officially.
